3S.B. Okmeydanı Egitim ve Araştırma Hast., Göz Kliniği, İstanbul, Prof. Dr. Purpose: To evaluate surgical results of the patients with idiopathic macular hole.
Materials and Methods: The records of 15 patients operated on for idiopathic macular hole between June 2005 and May 2009 were evaluated retrospectively. The diagnosis was based on clinical examination and optical coherence tomography.
Results: 14 of 15 patients were female (93%).The mean age of the patients was 65.6 (55-81). Mean duration of symptoms was 15.4 (1-96) months. 33% of eyes (n=5) were pseudophakic. Idiopathic macular hole has been staged as follows; stage 1b in 2 eyes, stage 2 in 4, stage 3 in 2, stage 4 in 7 eyes. Only SF6 injection was done in one patient with stage 1b macular hole, PPV+ILM removal and SF6 gas tamponade was done in 11 patients and PPV+ILM removal and C3F8 gas tamponade was done in 3 patients. Anatomical success rate was 66% (10 of15 patients). All the patients without anatomical success had stage 4 macular holes. Visual acuity was improved in 53% of patients (n:8). Postoperative elevated intraocular pressure is seen in 2 patients, cataract in one, macular pigment epithelial change in one and retinal detachment is seen in 3 patients. All patiens with postoperative retinal detachment had stage 4 macular hole. 4 (26%) patients got 0.3 or more visual acuity postoperatively and all these patients had 2-6 months of symptom duration and their holes were stage 3 or less.
Conclusions: Results of macular hole surgery are successfull. Keywords : Idiopathic macular hole, ILM peeling
