Familial Exudative Vitreoretinopathy
M.D. Associate Professor, Uludag University, School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Bursa/TURKEY
Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is an inherited, bilateral peripheral vascular disease in children with no association to prematurity. FEVR is genetically heterogeneous and can be inherited as a dominant, recessive, or X-linked trait. The clinical appearance varies considerably. The mildly affected patients may have only a small area of avascularity in their peripheral retina, visible only by fluorescein angiography. The sight-threatening features of FEVR are retinal exudations, neovascularization, epiretinal membranes, vitreo-retinal tractions and tractional retinal detachment, which results from retinal ischemia and leaking telangiectatic vessels. The main goal of treatment is the occlusion of abnormal retinal vessels and ischemic areas to avoid further complications.
