Diabetic Macular Edema and Steroids

3M.D. Professor, Dokuz Eylul University, Medical Faculty, Department of Ophtalmology, Izmir/TURKEY With an increasing trend, the incidence of diabetes among subjects over 20-years old has been reported as 13.7% in Turkey. Retinopaty is one of the devastating complications of such disease. In patients with diabetic retinopathy, the frequency of maculopathy that has the major effect on visual loss is reported approximately 10%. Intravitreally applicated steroids have been used as an effective headstone in the treatment of diabetic maculopathy during the last decades. In this review, a historical evaluation of intravitreal steroid applications is presented in terms of past and present time as well as forthcoming era.
