Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion
M.D. Asistant Proffessor, Mustafa Kemal University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Hatay/TURKEY
A case of branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) with improved vision after hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is presented. A 50-year-old woman admitted to our clinic with a sudden loss of vision at the right eye. Visual acuity was counting fingers. Fundus examination revealed that there were extensive pallor and edema in the lower quadrant of the retina due to BRAO. Ocular massage, intraocular pressure-lowering medications and then anterior chamber paracentesis were applied. The patient received a total of 20 sessions of HBO treatment which started within 24 hours. The patient had no systemic disease or smoking history. Any disease was not found after hematological and cardiological examination. Three months later, visual acuity improved to 1.0 at the right eye. Although superior visual field defect persists at the right eye, retinal pallor almost completely resolved. Intraocular pressure-lowering medications and early HBO therapy may provide a positive effect on the final visual acuity in BRAO.
