Combination Treatment and New Pharmacologic Agents in Exudative Age Related Macular Degeneration
M.D. Professor, Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty, Department of Ophthalmology, Istanbul/TURKEY
Choroidal neovascularization found in exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) appears to be a multifactorial process involving vascular, inflammatory, vascular, and angiogenic components. Combining various treatment modalities for exudative AMD targets multiple components of chroidal neovascularization and has the potential for similiar and perhaps synergistic effects while reducing treatment frequency. The purpose of this review is to discuss the current combination treatments (e.g., verteporfin photodynamic therapy and anti- VEGF agents, radiation therapy and anti-VEGF agents) for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration and to give some information about new pharmacologic agents in neovascular age-related macular degeneration.
