Posterior Segment Delivery Drugs Systems

Despite the significant improvements in the treatment of posterior
segment diseases in recent years, there are still pharmacodynamic
problems with those drugs due to the physiological and
anatomic constraints within the eye. At present, the treatment
of posterior segment disease is usually applied with local drug
administrations, mainly by intravitreal route. Although intravitreal
implants help to increase the duration and dosage of the
molecule, they have an increased side eff ect profile with repeated
applications.Systems that allow delivery of the drugs to the suprachoroidal space are promising because of the prolonged release to the posterior segment. It is also anticipated that encapsulated cell technology, port-release systems and drug coating technologies will have an impact on increasing the treatment eff icacy of retinal diseases by allowing a longer intravitreal drug stay.
In the future, new horizons emerge in the treatment of posterior segment diseases with the developments in ophthalmic pharmacology.
