Giant retinal tears are over 90 degrees tears which develop frequently
in young myopic adults with idiopathic or traumatic etiology.
Giant tear retinal detachments have specific features in
regards to involved patient group, treatment, prognosis and fellow
eye involvement and prophilactic aplications. Redetachment
following surgery are frequent, PVR can occur more often, free
fl ap can fold backwards and retinal wrinkles, slippage can be
seen. Preferences in treatment options can vary but pars plana
vitrectomy with the help of perfl orocarbon liquids and additional
encircling buckle, gas or silicone oil as tamponade greatly increased
current surgical success rates.
