THE EFFECT OF VITRECTOMY ON VISUAL PROGNOSIS IN IDIOPATHIC EPİRETİNAL MEMBRANES
Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı, ISPARTA
PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of vitrectomy on visual prognosis in idiopathic epiretinal membranes.METHOD: Vitrectomy is applied in 16 cases with epiretinal membranes. Various intravitreal instruments and diamond dust coated flexible cannula of Tano is used in surgery.
RESULTS: Total 16 eyes of 16 patients (9 female, 7 male; ages ranging between 19 and 67) included in the study. Five cases were associated with cystoid macular edema and 3 with macular holes. Posterior vitreous detachments were seen in 69% of cases. Visual acuities increased in 75% of cases and did't change in 25 %. Complications were small retinal hemorrhages in 3, macular hole in 1, and mild nuclear sclerosis in 4 cases.
CONCLUSION: Vitrectomy provides significant visual enhancements by removing macular tractions in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membranes. Keywords : Idiopatic epiretinal membranes, vitrectomy
