1H.Ü.TıpFak. Radyasyon Onkoloji AD.2Süleyman Demirci Üniversitesi Tıp Fak.Göz Hastalıkları AD. In rats, protective effect of verapamil (a calcium canal blocker) against radiation retinopathy was investigated. Control group (n:10) was followed up for 8 weeks in experimental conditions. Radiation group (n:10) was exoposed to 5 Gy external radiaton to whole cranium in 1 session and followed up for 8 weeks. Radiation-Verapamil group (n:20) was exposed to same radiation as radiation group and also received 8mg/kg daily subcutaneous injection of verapamil HCI for 8 weeks. Retinal sections were examined with electron microscopy. Myelin figure in photoreceptor cells, were detected in radiation group but not in radiation-verapamil group. Vascular collapse findings, cytoplasmic and mithocondrial edema, decrase in vesicle count were more prominent in radiation group than radiation-verapamil group. General morphological appearance was more disturbed in radiation-verapamil group than radiation group. In conclusion, verapamil has protective effect against radiation retinopathy following low dose radiation exposure but further investigations should be carried out for clinical applications.
