POSTOPERATIVE EXOPLANT REMOVAL IN RETINAL DETACHMENT SURGERY
SSK İstanbul Eğitim Hastanesi Göz Kliniği
150 patient had been operated for retinal detachment surgery in SSK Istanbul Hospital. Scleral buckling elements were removed from 11 eyes (7.3%), 3 patients (27%) had periocular infection and 8 patient (73%) had scleral exoplant extrusion. There were 7.5 mm of silicone sponges (507) in 6 (55%) and 5 mm (506,505) sponges in 5 patients (45%). Sponges were removed in average of 3.5 months after retinal surgery. S. Epidermidis was the cause of infection in 5 cases and S. Aureus in 2 cases. Retinal redetachment was observed in 3 (27%) patients after the removal. The cause of infection may be due to contamination at the time of surgery. It may take place many months after the surgery. Mechanical factors such as inadequate scleral sutures, anteriorly placed suture knots as well as sharp edges of big silicone rubber exoplants may contribute to erosion and infection. Keywords : retinal detachment, scleral buckle, proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
