1Ankara Numune Has. 1. Göz Kliniği ABD.2Ankara Üni. Çocuk Sağ. ve Hast. ABD. To investigate the prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), association between ROP and gestational age (GA), birth weight (BW- oxygen therapy, natural course of the disease, 205 infants whose GA less than 36 weeks, were examined at 4-6 weeks of age postnatally and followed up prospectively. Infants with ROP were examined weekly, without ROP were examined monthly until 6 months of age and thereafter clinically indicated.
Infants' birth weights were between 760-2700 gr. and GA between 25-36 weeks. Rop was noted in 41 eyes of 22 infants (%10). The condition resolved spontaneously in 31 eyes with stage 1-2 ROP. In 4 eyes with stage 3 ROP, ROP regressed in two spontaneously and one after criotherapy. One infant with stage 3 and 4 ROP in either eye was sent to surgery. Stage 5 ROP developed in two infants.
The development of ROP was positively correlated with low BW, GA and the duration of oxygen therapy. Keywords : Retinopathy of prematurity, birth weight, gestational age, oxygen therapy
