We have analysed the anatomical and visual outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy in cases with vitreous hemorrhage of various etiologies. The 40 eyes of 40 cases undergone vitrectomy since, we have began vitreoretinal surgery in 14 eyes, endolaser photocoagulation in 10 eyes liquid-gas/air exchange in 11 eyes, scleral indentation in 4 eyes, intravitreal silicon injection in 1 eye and cataract extraction in 9 eyes have been performed. The most common etiologic disease of vitreous hemorrhage was proliferative diabetic retinopathy (16 eyes), while the etiology was vein occlusion in 9 eyes, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in 4 eyes. Bales' disease in one and age related macular degeneration in another eye. The cases were followed up for an average time of 4,9 months. Vision has improved in 23 eyes (57.5 %) and 16 of them (%40) the improvement was 0.1 and more in Snellen chart. The visual acuity hasn't changed in 8 eyes (20%) while decreasing in 9 eyes (22.5%). Transient vitreal haze (17 eyes-42.5%) and retinal detachment (7 eyes-17.5%) were the most frequent complications. Compared to previous studies, our results with a case series of short follow-up time is encouraging.
