3İ.Ü. İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi Fizyoloji A.D., İstanbul. Purpose: This study was designed to investigate toxicity of indocyanine green in vitrectomized rabbit eyes.
Materials and Methods: Eighteen New Zealand white rabbits were divided in to three groups (six in each). All rabbits were vitrectomized. After vitrectomy and posterior hyaloid peeling, 0.1 ml of 0.1 % or 0.5 % ICG or 0.1 ml balanced salt solution was injected slowly just over the optic disc. The dye was then aspirated actively three minutes later. Clinical, light microscopic and electroretinographic evaluations were performed before and sixth week after the surgery.
Results: No clinical and light microscopic abnormalities were found in any group. Electroretinographic evaluations were also normal in all groups end of the sixth week.
Conclusion: No sign of toxicity was found short term presence of 0.1 ml 0.5% or 0.1% ICG in vitrectomized rabbit eyes.
Keywords : Indocynine green, retinal toxicity.
