Mersin Üniversitesi Tıp Fakl. Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Mersin
Age related macular degeneration is a major cause of severe visual loss and irreversibl blindness in elderly people. Visual acuity loss usually results from choroidal neovascularization. Until recent year, laser photocoagulation was the only treatment option found to be beneficial in largescale randomized clinical trials. Laser photocoagulation of choroidal neovascularization can reduce the risk of severe visual acuity loss. However, estimates suggest that laser photocoagulation is applicable to only 13 to 26% of cases. For the past ten years, alternative therapeutic options have been the focus of research. Photodynamic therapy is a new treatments which has been proved in large-scale randomized clinical trials to reduce the risk of vision loss in selected cases of age related macular degeneration with neovascularization. This paper rewievs current laser treatments of choroidal neovascularization.
