2Güney Kaliforniya Üniversitesi, Keck Tıp Fakültesi, Göz Hastalıkları Bölümü, Doheny Retina Enstitüsü, Los Angeles, A.B.D Purpose: To study the acute histopathological effects of radial optic neurotomy on optic disc and surrounding tissues in dog eyes.
Materials and Methods: Radial optic neurotomy was applied to normal right eyes of four healthy dogs under general anesthesia using a microvitreoretinal knife. The optic disc tissue was evaluated histopathologically after euthanasia.
Results: A local hemorrhage on the optic disc after neurotomy was managed by increasing the intraocular pressure. In the histological sections, the neurotomy cuts were found to include optic nevre head, lamina cribrosa, optic nevre fibers, retinachoroid- sclera and occasionally small disc vessels.
Conclusion: Acute histopathological findings of radial optic neurotomy of which, clinical effects, indications and safety have not been clearly stated yet, and which is still considered to be experimental, shows that the surgeons should be cautious in wide-spread application of this technique.
