Materials and Methods: Thirty eyes of 30 patients undergoing VRS, and of which IOP was between 22 and 30 mmHg on the first postoperative day, were included in this study and brinzolamide was given on the second postoperative day. IOP was measured by Goldmann applanation tonometry 1, 3, 7, 15, and 30 days after surgery. Detailed biomicroscopic anterior segment and fundus examination were performed in each eye. Statistical differences were evaluated by repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and p<0.05 was significant.
Results: Fifteen eyes with proliferative vitreoretinopathy and retinal detachment, 13 eyes with diabetic vitreous hemorrhage, and 2 eyes for removal of silicone oil underwent VRS. Twenty-two eyes were operated on with 20 G conventional vitrectomy and 8 eyes with transconjunctival 23 G sutureless vitrectomy. Twenty-four patients were male and 6 were female, of which mean age was 56.7±6.9. Silicone oil tamponade (5000 cs or 1000 cs) was used in 18 eyes and 15% C3F8 tamponade in 6 eyes. None of the patients had intraocular or postoperative complications. Pupillary block was not detected in any eyes. Mean IOP 1, 3, 7, 15, and 30 days after surgery was 25.1, 25.2, 18, 15, and 13.7 mmHg, respectively. The decrease in IOP was significant in the course of time (p=0.00), but, when the difference in IOP levels was evaluated among days separately, there was no significance between 1 and 3 days after surgery (p=0.268).
Conclusion: The efficacy of brinzolamide is more pronounced in the first week and thereafter in patients with increased IOP in the early period after VRS. Keywords : Brinzolamide, intraocular pressure, vitreoretinal surgery
