4S.B. Ulucanlar Göz Eğitim ve Araş. Hast. 2. Göz Kliniği, Ankara, Klinik Şefi, Uzm. Dr. Purpose: To compare the efficacy and result of conventional detachment surgery and vitreoretinal surgery in patient with rhegmatogeneus retinal detachment.
Materials and Methods: This study included 149 eyes of 149 patients that undergone conventional detachment surgery and vitreoretinal surgery due to rhegmatogeneus retinal detachment in SB Ankara Ulucanlar Eye Education and Research Hospital between January 2004 and June 2007. The patients were evaluated for type of surgery and postoperative recurrent retinal detachment.
Results: Eighty five patients (57%) had vitreoretinal surgery (Group 1) and 64 cases (43%) underwent conventional surgery (Group 2). In Group 1, patients were treated with pars plana vitrectomy, posterior hyaloid peeling, endolaser photocoagulation and intravitreal tamponade. In Group 2, local buckling or encircling, subretinal fluid drainage, criopexy, and/or intravitreal air or gas was performed to the patients. Recurrent retinal detachments were observed in 25 of 85 patients (29.4%) in group 1 and 11 of 64 patients (17.2%) in group 2 during the follow-up period.
Conclusion: There was no statistically significant difference between conventional detachment surgery and vitreoretinal surgery groups on the postoperative success in rhegmatogeneus retinal detachment in point of recurrent retinal detachments.
