In order to investigate the correlation between diabetic retinopathy and hearing loss, 35 type 2 diabetic patients and age-matched 28 healthy controls were evaluated odiologically.
The patients were grouped according to retinopathy: Group 1,12 patients without retinopathy and 10 patients with background diabetic retiopathy, and group II, 13 patients with proliferative retinopathy.
All diabetics showed significant low, mid, and high frequencies of hearing losses, as compared to the controls (P<0.001). However, the significant difference was observed only in low frequency between groups I and II patients (P<0.05).
Our results suggest that diabetic sensorineural hearing loss results from microangiopathic involvement of endolymphatic sac and acoustic neuropathy. Keywords : Diabetes mellitus, hearing loss, retinopathy
