PARS PLANA VITRECTOMY FOR INTRAOCULAR FOREIGN BODIES
Ankara Hastanesi Göz Kliniği
Pars plana vitrectomy techniques were performed in the removal of intraocular foreign bodies in 14 eyes in our clinic between June 1994- May 1996. One of the foreign bodies was located in orbita, one of them into the vitreous, two of them embedded in the choroid, and were extracted through sclerotomy sites by foreign body forceps or electromagnet. We performed pars plana vitrectomy and lensectomy together in 13 cases while in one case only PPV was employed. After a follow-up time of avaregely 30 months, 71.4% anatomic success and 64.2% functional success were achieved. In two cases phthisis bulbi developed. Although the prognosis is affected'by the location, size, entering site, structure and the duration in the eye of the foreign body, good results can be obtained by pars plana vitrectomy. We observed that the success rate decreases and the prognosis worsens when the size of the foreign body increases.
