The Results of Scleral Buckling Surgery for Rhegmatogenous
S.B.Beyoğlu Göz Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, İstanbul
Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the reattachment rate and functional success and complications of scleral buckling surgery for retinal detachment.Material and Methods: Fifty eyes of 49 patients underwent different combinations of scleral buckling surgery between April 2001 and November 2002. These cases were studied retrospectively, regarding the reattachment and functional success and complications.
Results: Of these 50 eyes, %32 were myopic, %26 were pseudophakic and %24 had history of trauma. The period between the retinal detachment and scleral buckling ranged from 1 day to 1 year (mean time 6,25 ±11,2 week). There was grade A proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) in %58 of eyes, grade B in %24 of eyes, grade C1 in %8 of eyes, grade C2 in %4 of eyes and grade C3 in %6 of eyes. The mean postoperative follow up period was 8,75±5,2 months (6-27 months). The reattachment and functional success rates were %80 and %64 respectively. Postoperative complications were intraocular pressure increase in 8 eyes (%16), exposure of the buckling material in 2 eyes (%4), epiretinal membrane in 3 eyes (%6) and anterior segment ischemia in 1 eye (%2). The reasons for anatomical failure were PVR in 5 eyes (%10) and retinal tear related factors in 5 eyes (%10).
Conclusion: We recommend that scleral buckling surgery is a usefull surgical procedure, even in cases with grade C proliferative vitreoretinopathy with 80% success rate. Keywords : retinal detachment, scleral buckling surgery, reattachment
