It has been reported that the guillotine-like cutting blows by the inner cylinder of the vitrectomy probe may affect cell membranes of the vitreous specimens obtained during vitrectomy. Experimental endophthalmia models were developed to study whether there is a superiorority of vitreous aspiration biopsy to vitrectomy materials. With this aim equal amounts of Staphylococcus aureus were inoculated into the midvitreous of 8 eyes of 8 rabbits. Vitreous aspiration biopsy followed by vitrectomy with the vitrectomy device being developed by the author (M.E) was performed on each eye. Vitreous specimens were obtained using different speeds (100, 300, 600 cuts/minute) during vitrectomy. 32 vitreous specimens obtained under 4 different categories were cytologically analyzed. The Cytopsin preparations were dyed with the May-Grunwald Giemsa technique. The morphological properties of the cells, the intactness of the cytoplasmic and nuclear membranes and the cell numbers obtained were evaluated. Results have shown that there was no significant difference between the vitreous specimens obtained by aspiration biopsy and vitrectomy. Keywords : Experimental Endophthalmia, Vitrectomy, Cytology
