4K.T.Ü. Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Trabzon, Prof. Dr. Nd:YAG laser posterior hyaloidotomy was intervened to two male patients with acute visual loss due to premacular subhyaloid haemorrhage between 2005 and 2006. Their etiology, visual acuity, fundus photographs and prognosis were analyzed.
Before treatment, visual acuities were hand motion for the patients aged 71 years old and 0.6 for the other patient aged 52 years old who had parafoveal haemorrhage. The etiologies of haemorrhage were macroaneurysm and proliferative diabetic retinopathy, respectively. After Nd: YAG laser hyaloidotomy, the hemorrhages drained into the vitreous cavity and complete resorbtion was observed in both patients three weeks later. The mean follow up time was 6 months. In the last examination, their visual acuities reached to 0.3 and 0.7, respectively, and they had no any evidence of damage due to laser application.
Nd:YAG laser hyaloidotomy is a easy, safe and effective procedure for premacular subhyaloid hemorrhages. It causes rapid resolution of premacular subhyaloid haemorrhage, and thus decrease the need for vitreoretinal surgery.
