2Rothwell Family Practice 618 Deception Bay Road Deception Bay 4508 Qld Australia DOI : 10.37845/ret.vit.2026.35.22 Objective: To compare visual and anatomical outcomes in cases of impacted intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) treated with retinectomy combined with choroidectomy and laser photocoagulation versus laser photocoagulation alone.
Materials & Methods: A retrospective comparative cohort study was conducted in the Department of Ophthalmology, Lahore General Hospital, from May 1, 2023, to November 1, 2023. A total of 14 patients with post-traumatic IOFBs meeting inclusion criteria were enrolled. Patients were allocated into two groups: Group A (n=7) underwent retinectomy with choroidectomy and laser photocoagulation, while Group B (n=7) received laser photocoagulation alone. Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics, including age, sex, IOFB characteristics, and presenting visual acuity, were recorded. Outcome measures included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 6 months, improvement of ≥2 Snellen lines, and postoperative complications. Statistical analysis was performed using appropriate tests with significance set at p<0.05.
Results: At 6 months follow-up, Group A demonstrated significantly better visual outcomes compared to Group B. The proportion of patients achieving ≥2-line BCVA improvement was 71.4% in Group A versus 42.9% in Group B (p=0.048). Final BCVA of 20/40 or better was achieved in 42.9% of Group A patients compared to 14.3% in Group B (p=0.042). Anatomical success (retinal attachment) was achieved in 85.7% of Group A versus 71.4% of Group B patients. Complication rates, including recurrent retinal detachment (14.3% vs. 28.6%) and proliferative vitreoretinopathy (14.3% vs. 28.6%), were lower in Group A.
Conclusion: In cases of impacted IOFBs with significant retinal or choroidal damage, retinectomy combined with choroidectomy and laser photocoagulation yields superior visual and anatomical outcomes compared to laser photocoagulation alone. Surgical approach should be individualized based on IOFB characteristics, extent of ocular damage, and clinical presentation.
