Laser Photocoagulation in Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Ankara, Prof. Dr.
Age-related macular degeneration is the major cause of visual loss in elderly. Visual loss results from choroidal neovascularizations which occur in the exudative form of the disease. Studies have been ongoing for years in order to prevent the development of choroidal neovascularizations or to treat them. Macular Photocoagulation Study Group demonstrated that laser photocoagulation can, in certain cases, favorably alter the natural course of choroidal neovascularizations. Unfortunately, only 15% of the patients are eligible for laser photocoagulation, and alternative therapeutic options have been under investigation. This paper reviews the classic laser treatments in age-related macular degeneration.
